APPA Conference Draws Record Turnout as Facilities Leaders Redefine Their Role on Campus

APPA, the association empowering the educational facilities community across North America, concluded its 2026 Annual Conference this July. The event drew 500 plus attendees from 47 U.S. states and 6 countries, representing 179 educational institutions and 111 business partners, underscoring the scale of the community APPA serves and the growing demand for the learning and peer networking opportunity the association provides. Across two dozen sessions, presenters described a shift in how the profession sees itself: facilities teams, long treated as a back of house function, are increasingly recognized as the stewards of the largest physical assets most institutions own and the managers of the second largest budget line on many campuses. Programming addressed deferred maintenance, enrollment volatility, a volatile energy market, and a retiring skilled trades workforce.
The conference opened with the first Senior Facilities Officers Summit since 2019, a dedicated gathering of senior leaders from research universities, community colleges, K-12 school districts, and academic medical centers to discuss institutional finance and a broadened definition of enterprise risk. Days earlier, thirty-seven chapter and regional leaders convened for the first APPA Leadership Exchange, a new initiative to align the association’s national, regional, and chapter levels.

APPA’s network reaches nearly every role that keeps a campus running, from senior facilities executives to the trades, spanning custodial, grounds, construction, safety, and space planning teams alongside business and operations leaders. That range is what makes APPA’s institutional and business partner community a direct line to the people who make campus facilities decisions.
APPA also used the conference to launch its Custodial Guidelines Training, a two-track program covering custodial fundamentals for front-line staff and custodial leadership for supervisors, available now with an institution-wide license.
