WESTON, WV, UNITED STATES, August 12, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders (FCDR) has launched long-term recovery operations in Lewis and Upshur counties to help families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by the July flooding.
Preliminary damage assessments across the affected counties have identified more than 1,600 homes damaged by the July flooding, including 33 destroyed and 227 with major damage, with the most severe destruction concentrated in Lewis and Upshur counties.
The Christian nonprofit’s immediate work will focus on cleanup, debris removal, and property stabilization, with volunteer teams transitioning as quickly as possible into repairing damaged homes and, where homes cannot be saved, rebuilding them for families with significant unmet needs.
Among the first homeowners identified is an elderly mother with disabilities and her adult daughter, who also has a disability. As floodwaters rose to nearly seven feet inside their home, the daughter managed to help her mother reach the second floor before emergency responders rescued both women through an opening cut into the roof. Their home is now uninhabitable, underscoring the long road to recovery many flood survivors now face.

For more than two decades, Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders has mobilized volunteers to help families recover from major disasters across the United States. Unlike organizations focused primarily on emergency response, FCDR specializes in long-term recovery, sending volunteer teams from across the country to restore homes for families who are uninsured, underinsured, or otherwise unable to recover on their own.
FCDR will work in coordination with local officials, Long-Term Recovery Groups, churches, and nonprofit partners to identify homeowners with documented unmet needs and ensure its efforts complement existing assistance. Recovery partners include Christ in Action, Hope Force International, Mercy Chefs, Weaverland Disaster Services, and other organizations serving affected communities.
Volunteer mission teams will be housed at WVU Jackson’s Mill near Weston, a central base from which they can serve families throughout Lewis and Upshur counties. As projects are identified and funding, materials, and volunteer teams become available, FCDR expects to begin restoring flood-damaged homes and rebuilding those that cannot be saved.
Churches, civic organizations, businesses, and volunteer teams are invited to support the recovery effort. Skilled construction volunteers are especially needed, though there are roles for people without construction experience as well. Financial gifts help families whose needs exceed their insurance coverage and government assistance.
